Wood Char Depth: Interpretation in Fire Investigations
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Wood char depth patterns have been considered important by fire investigators in most countries where significant use is made of wood as a construction material. This is natural, since post-fire patterns found on wood members are generally more pronounced and extensive than those found on many other construction materials. But the present state of affairs has been such that there is not much agreement on what quantitative interpretation, if any, can be placed on such patterns. In fact, respected specialists have suggested that charring rates are meaningless with respect to fire investigations [1][2]. The standard guide for fire investigators used in the US, NFPA 921 [3], states that: “The investigator is cautioned that no specific time of burning can be determined based solely on the depth of char.” Nonetheless, it then devotes two pages to a discussion on how to measure depth of char and what conceivable deductions might be made from these measurements, although it arrives at no definite conclusions on the latter point.

Comparative Performance of Three Magnesium Compounds on Thermal Degradation Behavior of Red Gum Wood
The effect of basic magnesium carbonate (BMC), magnesium hydroxide (MH), and magnesium chloride hydrate (MCH) on thermal degradation of red gum wood was studied using cone calorimetry, Thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization. The results showed common fire retardation actions of the three compounds by releasing incombus...

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of applying methods andamount of ammonium polyphosphate (0, 2 and 4 wt%) on fire retardancy andmechanical properties of wood flour/polypropylene composites. The resultsshowed that addition of fire retardant improved the mechanical properties such astensile and flexural strengths and fire retardancy of composites. But by increasingof fire retar...

Charred biomass generated by wildland fire has attracted increased interest as a functional component of terrestrial ecosystems. Black carbon (C) in the form of char is a widespread but unique material contributing to biogeochemical processes including long-term carbon storage and soil productivity. These functions have long been recognized by the biogeochemical and soil sciences, but have so f...

Fire-retarding properties of wollastonite nanofibers in poplar wood (Populus nigra) were studied here. Some physical properties such as water absorption, volumetric swelling and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) were also measured. Specimens were prepared according to the ISO 11925 specifications for the fire-retarding properties and according to the ASTM D4446 -2002 specifications for th...
